由于人类免疫缺陷病毒(HIV)因病毒高水平突变而产生对多种药物的耐药性，迫切需要发现新的治疗靶点。研究证明HIV整合酶在HIV周期中呈正态分布，有可能作为HIV治疗的一个新靶点。发现许多化合物在体外能够抑制整合酶，但有抗病毒活性且细胞毒性较低者很少。二酮酸衍生物具有高选择性抗病毒活性，且细胞毒性较低，是目前最具前景的整合酶抑制剂。其中某些化合物近来已进入临床试验阶段。
